Know your numbers – I wish I had taken my own advice!
A few years ago I set up a side hustle to run alongside my bookkeeping business. I embraced the new challenge and could not resist buying equipment, products and training to compliment my new business.
After two years, I was horrified to discover that I had lost money! How could that have happened? And how embarrassing given that I have worked in finance for over 25 years! Upon reflection, I was making so many unnecessary purchases and had not stopped to consider how this overspend was going to affect my profit.
After that awkward discovery, I set up my own bookkeeping as if I were one of my clients. I tracked every penny, I regularly reviewed my accounts, and I used my accounts to help make decisions regarding moving my business forward. I soon then profited from this side hustle. Phew!
Spending time with my family is one of my favourite pastimes. We love our holidays and have visited some lovely places. My parents and brother moved to California when I was younger, so I spent 25 years visiting there every summer. Nowadays, we tend to stay closer to home. The Spanish islands being a favourite spot. That said, Cornwall is a massive favourite of mine to visit and I never tire of it.
So the spare room in our house also doubles as my office. It’s a lovely space where I can focus on my business whilst the family move around the rest of the house. As a mum of two grown up children, I know only too well what it is like to juggle a business and raise a family. Helping mums who have chosen to set up their own businesses can be extremely rewarding. I understand their struggles and help them to be in control of their business finances. Having the confidence to prepare and understand their own accounts has proved empowering for many of my clients.
Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much
